Mental health incidents: if the patient does not need ED for a physical issue, call MHUT — option 2 on the single telephony line 0333 038 9993 — before selecting alternatives to ED. Call for ALL MH incidents (including low-toxicity overdose, self-harm not requiring wound closure, and currently suicidal patients) unless exclusions apply.
Key exclusion: do NOT call for toxic overdoses or significant injury unless the patient has capacity and further shared decision-making is required.
